In-text citations, where nursing papers bleed.
Nursing rubrics lean hard on evidence, so citation mechanics get read closely. The pattern rules that settle most red ink: author and year for paraphrases, with a page or paragraph number added for direct quotes. Use the ampersand inside parentheses but the word and in the sentence itself. Three or more authors take the first author plus et al. from the very first citation under APA 7.
Two habits do the heaviest lifting. First, cite the specific claim, not the paragraph: every statistic, guideline and clinical assertion carries its own citation even when the source repeats. Second, quote almost never. Nursing faculty read quotation-stuffed papers as evidence you have not digested the literature, and paraphrase with citation as evidence you have.
When a source has no page numbers, a webpage or an online guideline, direct quotes still need a locator: a paragraph number or section heading that lets the grader find the line. Skipping the locator is a small error with outsized visibility, because it sits exactly where grading eyes already are.

Graders cross-check: every in-text citation must appear in the references and every reference must appear in the text, and orphans on either side are the fastest formatting points you will ever lose. Entries are alphabetical, double spaced, with a hanging indent. Journal titles and volume numbers sit in italics, article titles in sentence case, and DOIs are presented as full links in the current style.
Currency matters in this field specifically. Most nursing rubrics ask for recent, peer-reviewed sources, and many define recent explicitly, commonly as the last five years, so check your rubric's definition before you search. A beautifully formatted reference from two decades ago still fails the row that says current evidence.

A few errors show up in nursing submissions so often that graders hunt for them. Drug names stay lowercase unless a brand name is intended. Abbreviations like CAUTI or EBP get spelled out at first use with the abbreviation in parentheses, then used consistently. No. APA 7 removed the running head requirement for student papers, keeping it only for professional manuscripts, so a student title page needs the bold title, your name, affiliation, course, instructor and date, plus a page number in the top right corner. Individual instructors can still ask for one, so if your rubric names a running head, the rubric wins.
How recent do sources need to be in a nursing paper?
Check the rubric first, because programs write their own currency rules. The common expectation in nursing coursework is recent peer-reviewed literature, frequently defined as published within the last five years, with allowances for landmark theories and classic frameworks. How do I cite a source with many authors in APA 7?
In the text, any work with three or more authors is cited as the first author followed by et al. from the first mention. In the reference list, APA 7 asks you to list all authors up to twenty before using an ellipsis pattern for longer author strings.
